There are more cons than pros in Apple Watch's new heart monitor app

The watch will also have an "irregular rhythm" notification feature, which alerts people to potential problems and there's every reason to believe it will generate many false positives

The newest version of the Apple Watch will feature a heart monitor app that can do a form of an electrocardiogram. Many have greeted this announcement as a great leap forward for health. The president of the American Heart Association even took part in the product launch.
For a more measured response, it’s worth looking at potential downsides, and it turns out there are a few.
The upside potential is twofold. First, doctors could monitor — at a distance — how patients with known heart problems are functioning outside the office. Second, the device could diagnose heart problems in people who don’t know they have them, picking up abnormal heart rhythms earlier than would otherwise be possible.
With respect to monitoring from a doctor, the Food and Drug Administration “cleared” the app — an easier hurdle to surmount than “approval.” But it specifically said people with diagnosed atrial fibrillation, one of the most common heart arrhythmias, should not be using the app.
If that’s the case, the major potential for the device — which will arrive later this year — is to pick up arrhythmias in otherwise healthy people. That’s still a big selling point. Picking up abnormal function earlier could theoretically lead to improvements in health, such as reductions in strokes.
But just because something seems like a good idea doesn’t mean it is. No screening test is perfect. In the simplest sense, whenever we consider the results of medical tests, they can be “positive” or “negative.”
In general, we would like people who are sick to have a positive screening result, and people who are well to have a negative result. Unfortunately, people who are sick sometimes have a negative result. Those are false negatives. People who are well sometimes have a positive result. Those are false positives.
Both of these outcomes are worrisome. A false negative might leave someone who needs medical help with a mistaken sense of assurance. Given that relatively few people have serious, undiagnosed arrhythmias with no symptoms (if people did, we would be screening for this more often), this isn’t the major concern. False positives are, because they cost us time and money, as well as cause emotional distress.
The health care system is already busy, if not overloaded. No physician wants to field calls from patients who have no problems. Such patients will require visits and further testing, and will potentially receive interventions. They’ll generate bills and harms without benefits.
The watch will also have an “irregular rhythm” notification feature, which alerts people to potential problems. There’s every reason to believe it will generate many false positives. Before granting clearance, the FDA reviewed data collected by the Stanford Heart study for 266 people who got such a notification. Most of the notifications were wrong.

The iOS 12 is compatible with 26 Apple devices - the iPhone SE and above, iPad Mini 2 and above, and iPod Touch 6th generation. Here is what is new in the iOS 12 and a list of compatible devices

Cupertino, US-based technology giant Apple is now rolling out the iOS 12 operating system for its iPhone, iPad and iPod devices. First unveiled at the Apple WWDC 2018 on June 5, the iOS 12 promises better speed and performance, and brings new features like improved artificial reality, animated personalised emojis, group FaceTime and Screen Time. The new operating system also gets new Siri shortcuts that now enable it to work with any app.

Faster performance
The iOS 12 is designed to make everyday tasks on your iPhone or iPad faster and more responsive with performance improvements across the system. According to the company, the camera launches up to 70 per cent faster, the keyboard appears up to 50 per cent faster and typing is more responsive. Even when there is a lot going on across the system, apps can launch up to twice as fast.
Enhanced AR experience
The new ARKit 2 now enables developers to create AR-ready apps with new tools to integrate shared experience, persistent AR experience tied to a specific location, object detection and image tracking, making AR apps even more dynamic. Designed in collaboration with Pixar, the new open file format USDZ makes it easy to experience AR nearly anywhere in iOS, including apps like Messages, Safari, Mail, Files and News, delivering powerful graphics and animation features.

Even after sluggish sales, iPhone X becomes most profitable phone for Apple

Meanwhile, India contributed to just one per cent of the total iPhone X shipments so far but the device was well received in the US market

Riding on 63 million shipments till August 2018, Apple's iPhone X is on track to be the most successful revenue and profit-generating iPhone ever, a Counterpoint Research report has said.
However, cumulative shipments of the iPhone X are lower than iPhone 6, which was its most-successful device, for a similar period since launch.
iPhone 6 shipped 30 million more units than iPhone X during its first 10 months of sales, so it missed the "Volume Super Cycle" but drove the Cupertino-headquartered giant's "Revenue Super Cycle".
According to Counterpoint's "Market Monitor" report, by comparison, during the iPhone 6 Super Cycle, Apple took only six months to achieve similar volume, post its launch in 2014.
"iPhone X drove a completely radical new design language that helped Apple to command a significantly higher Average Selling Price (ASP) at a point when the overall smartphone market was beginning to saturate," the market reseach firm said in a statement.
Apple has actually delivered a revenue super-cycle, posting record iPhone revenues and ASPs since the iPhone X launch.
"iPhone X is therefore also a factor in Apple becoming the first trillion-dollar company," Counterpoint added.
Meanwhile, India contributed to just one per cent of the total iPhone X shipments so far but the device was well received in the US market with demand reaching an all-time high during the initial months of launch.
"This shows in these large volumes' emerging markets, Apple needs to recheck its strategy if it wants to grow its user base or top-line," Counterpoint noted.

Apple shelving UPI shows how foreign giants trip over Indian regulations

The first of the issues is the data localisation recommended by RBI; then there are Justice Srikrishna panel's draft privacy Bill, health ministry guidelines, and even the national e-commerce policy

It is an oft-repeated, well known story, only the actors keep changing. For more than a year, Facebook-owned instant messaging giant WhatsApp has been looking to foray into India’s thriving digital payments industry but has moved little beyond a beta launch. Now, it is the $1-trillion US tech giant Apple that cannot find it in itself to launch a proprietary payments product using the country’s flagship Unified Payments Interface (UPI), suggest reports.
Apple’s move to shelve its UPI plan comes at a time when Google has placed massive bets on the Indian payments ecosystem, especially with its Google Tez app, recently rebranded to Google Pay, which allows people to pay, collect and request payments using UPI. However, Google isn’t too sure of its own future, either. The company is known to be assessing its plans in India, considering strict data localisation norms.
If the UPI values are rising at a breakneck speed each month – they have eclipsed credit card spends in the country – what could possibly be the reason for the three big giants in India’s digital story remaining largely out of the race? Regulations!
The first of the lot is data localisation as recommended by the Reserve Bank of India. Then there are Justice Srikrishna panel’s draft privacy Bill, guidelines of the health ministry, and even the national e-commerce policy. Data localisation simply means storing specific data related to individuals inside the geographic boundaries of the country. However, to different departments it means different things, and it can get confusing for companies.
For instance, earlier this year, RBI issued its master directions and gave companies six months to move to the country all payments and financial data related to Indian cities. RBI also used the phrase “only in India”, implying none of this data could be taken outside of the country for processing.
India’s payment industry has traditionally depended on giants like Mastercard, Visa and American Express, which brought a plastic money boom to the country. These three companies are known to process data at their master data centres outside India, so setting up new data centres just to satisfy RBI’s conditions did not go down too well with these players. Apple iPhone X: Issues with FaceID? Apple could replace your device

According to the Daily Telegraph, the tech giant admitted the problem that reportedly lies in the rear camera of the device

iPhone X owners who are facing problem with the FaceID unlock scanner may get a new device if their smartphone cannot be repaired, a report has claimed.
According to a report in MacRumors, the Cupertino-based company "updated its service policy for a limited number of iPhone X units that might be experiencing issues with Face ID".
The policy said that the support personnel must first try to fix the rear camera if Face ID problems are present. If the issue is not resolved, Apple would replace the whole unit instead of repairing the same device.
"In order to provide the best customer experience, if a customer reports that their iPhone X is having Face ID issues, you may be able to resolve the issue with a rear camera repair," MacRumors quoted Apple as saying.
"Run AST 2 on the customer's device to check the camera. If the diagnostics find issue with the camera, perform the repair to see if the issue is resolved. If the issue is not resolved, perform a whole unit replacement instead of a same-unit display repair," the company has said.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the tech giant admitted the problem that reportedly lies in the rear camera of the device.
The report mentioned that the TrueDepth camera at the front and the telephoto lens at the back are linked.
iPhone X sports a unique "FaceID" facial recognition system to unlock the device. The feature is enabled by a 'True Depth' camera system in the A11 neural engine.
It is basically a 3D face scanner that uses several components to analyse a person's face and verify identity. It is also expensive to fix.

Apple rides iPhone profits to become the most profitable global brand in Q4

Apple iPhone X generated 35% of the total handset industry profit in Q4 2017. In smartphone segment, Apple achieved 86% of global profits. Latest news on Apple iPhone X, its pricing and market control

US-based technology giant Apple remained the most profitable brand in the fourth quarter of 2017-17, capturing 86 per cent of total handset market profits, according to a report by Counterpoint Research.
According to the report, Apple’s anniversary-edition smartphone iPhoneX alone generated 35 per cent of the total handset industry profits. This is a significant landmark, as the model was available in the market for only two months during Q4 2017. The premium flagship smartphone with notch-based screen generated five times more profits than the combined profits of 600-plus Android original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) during Q4 2017.
Apple iPhones, including the current flagships like the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, along with yesteryear’s flagships iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, led the list of top 10 smartphones that captured 90 per cent of the total handset profits. Other than iPhones, only Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 Plus managed to feature in the top 10, at the sixth and eighth positions, respectively.
The report highlights that the older-generation iPhones like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6 generated more profits than some of the more recent Android flagships from key Chinese OEMs. Chinese electronics giant and the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer Huawei became the leading brand among all Chinese brands, with its profit increasing 59 per cent year-on-year.
After its international unveiling on September 12, 2017, the Apple iPhone X was launched in India and other international markets on November 3. The anniversary-edition smartphone was priced at a premium – Rs 89,000 for the base model with 64GB storage and Rs 1,02,000 for 256GB storage variant.

Apple to fix bug, Siri will no longer read updates on locked iPhone screen

Siri's behaviour becomes a privacy issue because it can read out messages and emails from third-party apps such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Gmail

Apple has promised to fix a bug that can allow Siri to read aloud hidden lock screen notifications from many apps on iPhones.
"We are aware of the issue and it will be addressed in an upcoming software update," Apple said in a statement provided to MacRumors.
The fix is likely to come in iOS 11.3, which remains in beta testing, but Apple might also address the problem with a minor update such as iOS 11.2.7, MacRumors reported on Thursday.
As a result of the bug, Siri can read out notification content, even those that are hidden, from a wide selection of apps when someone asks the assistant to do so without verifying whether the command was coming from the owner of the device.
The problem was reported by Brazilian website MacMagazine earlier this week.
In a test, MacRumors reproduced this issue on an iPhone X running both iOS 11.2.6 and the latest iOS 11.3 beta, while confirming that it does not affect iMessage.
Siri's behaviour becomes a privacy issue because it can read out messages and emails from third-party apps such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Gmail, even if an iPhone is locked and notifications are hidden, the report said.

According to Digitimes research analyst Luke Lin, the next-generation iPhone's manufacturing bill of materials will be over 10 per cent lower than that for iPhone X

The Apple iPhone X was the first smartphone that crossed the $1,000 price mark -- the smartphone was launched at $999 and $1149 for 64GB and $256, respectively. According to Lin, who cited information from Apple's upstream supply chain, the next-generation iPhone’s manufacturing bill for materials will be over 10 per cent lower than that for the iPhone X. He added, that the MBOM of the iPhone X was more than US$400 in 2017.
In the past, Lin also alleged that Apple was preparing for a new inexpensive smartphone similar to the iPhone SE for 2018, featuring the wireless charging functionality, but without 3D-sensing technology.ALSO READ: Apple plans giant high-end iPhone, lower-priced model, aims to boost sales

iPhone X debut: Will slow supply dampen Apple's hopes in India?

iPhone X, which marks the 10th anniversary of the device, costs Rs 89,000 for a 64 GB model

After facing a lacklustre response to iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus globally, including in India, Apple has now placed its bet on successful delivery of "super premium" iPhone Xthat aims for a scheduled arrival on November 3.
In the past few days, several media reports have claimed that Apple is facing a huge supply gap primarily for two reasons: difficulties in assembling the new facial identification software and 3D camera, and "off the charts" pre-orders for iPhone X after the Apple fraternity didn't make the expected beeline for iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
The scenario suggests that people will have to wait long before they can grab an iPhone X. Analysts have already warned that the stock on hand is scarce, owing to constrained supply of key iPhone X components. The advanced depth-sensing camera system in iPhone X requires parts that only a few manufacturers can produce.
The iPhone X, which marks the 10th anniversary of the device, costs Rs 89,000 for a 64 GB model and Rs 1.02 lakh for the 256 GB variant.
According to Tarun Pathak, Associate Director, Mobile Devices and Ecosystems, Counterpoint Research, supply issues will have three main implications for Apple.
"Either the demand for iPhone X will shift to subsequent quarters or some part of the demand will be absorbed by iPhone 8 series if supply is delayed for long. In both the cases, it won't have much impact on Apple as its user base will remain within the iOS ecosystem," Pathak told IANS.
However, there is another scenario - where an Android premium user who wishes to shift to iPhone X decides instead to upgrade within the Android ecosystem due to unavailability of iPhone X. (more)

Foldable iPhone coming! Apple partners LG for OLED smartphone screens

The foldable iPhone panel production could start from 2020

As Samsung plans to launch a bendable smartphone "Galaxy X" in 2018, Apple has reportedly begun work on a foldable iPhone with LG Display.
According to a report in the Korean website The Investor, Apple has decided to go with LG and not Samsung (Samsung OLED displays are the best in the industry) owing to the fear that specifications could be leaked as Samsung is its arch rival.
"According to The Bell, LG Display recently created a task force to develop a foldable OLED screen for the new iPhone model," the report said on Thursday.
The Foldable iPhone panel production could start from 2020.
LG has reportedly completed its own foldable OLED panel prototype and has been upgrading the durability and the yield rate.
The company recently started its first OLED production for phones at its E5 plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province.
Apple is also considering investing in LG to speed up OLED production.
Meanwhile, Samsung is exclusively supplying panels for the latest iPhone X -- the first OLED iPhone.
"Amid Samsung's near monopoly in mobile OLED production, Apple has been strengthening its partnership with LG Display, its long-time LCD partner," the report added.
In 2017, Samsung will hold approximately 89 per cent of the AMOLED (active matrix OLED) display panel market, analysts at UBI Research said recently.
Currently, some smartphones that feature OLED screens are iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S8+, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, OnePlus 5, LG V30 and Vivo X9s.
The Samsung "Galaxy X" is likely to make an appearance during the CES consumer technology show in January.

Google Pixel 2 camera sets new record, beats Apple iPhone 8 & Samsung Note8

According to DxO review, the Pixel 2 smartphones score an impressive 98 points out of 100, which is 9 points more than yesteryear's Google Pixel and 4 points more than dual camera clad iPhone 8 Plus

Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL devices might lack the luster of flagship smartphones but they possess some major enhancements that not only give them an edge but also help them race past over the competitors in some of the departments.
Notwithstanding absence of dual camera lens set-up, which has been a common feature followed by Apple and Samsung in their flagship iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note8, both the handsets sport singular 12-megapixel shutter.
The 12-megapixel camera in Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL is one of the key feature among many others that has been getting a lot of attention. The camera not only outshines in terms of performance, it also takes away the title of ‘best camera in mobile phone’ from Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
According to DxO mark review, the Pixel 2 smartphones score an impressive 98 points out of 100, which is 9 points more than yesteryear’s Google Pixel and 4 points more than dual camera clad iPhone 8 Plus. With this score, the Google Pixel 2 sets a new record for overall smartphone camera quality.

Apple iPhone X to cost Rs 89,000 in India: Know all about the new iPhones

With The anniversary-edition iPhone X takes a step forward in what could be the future of iPhone devices

In arguably the biggest event of the year in the world of technology, Apple Inc on September 12 unveiled the anniversary-edition iPhone X -- the roman X signifying the 10 years of Apple iPhones -- and two other iPhone iterations, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, among other devices.
While the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are designed on the blueprints of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the iPhone X, with its innovative face recognition technology and other features, takes a leap towards what is now seen as the future of iPhone devices.
Let’s take a look at the features and specifications of the new iPhones:
With a glossy stainless steel frame body covered on the front and back by a glass design, the iPhone X has a rather wide 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED display. The glassy back is accentuated by a vertically placed 12-megapixel dual camera set-up, which supports optical image stabilisation (OIS). On the front, a new 7-megapixel TrueDepth camera enables auto image stabilisation and precise exposure control, and brings the portrait mode to the front camera for stunning selfies with a depth-of-field (Bokeh) effect.
The iPhone X dual camera set-up boasts a ƒ/1.8 aperture on the wide-angle camera and an improved ƒ/2.4 aperture on the telephoto camera for better photos and videos. A new quad LED True Tone Flash offers twice the uniformity of light and includes Slow Sync, which brings more uniformly lit backgrounds and foregrounds.
The cameras on the iPhone X are custom-tuned for the augmented reality (AR) experience. Each camera is individually calibrated with new gyroscopes and accelerometers for accurate motion tracking.
The camera also delivers the highest quality video capture ever in a smartphone, with better video stabilisation, 4K video up to 60fps and 1080p slo-mo up to 240fps. The Apple-designed video encoder provides real-time image and motion analysis for optimal quality video.
With iOS 11, iPhone X supports HEIF and HEVC for up to two times the compression and storage for twice as many photos and videos. (more)
