Movie review: Baahubali 2 - The Conclusion is a colossal bore

Beneath its dazzling veneer, this emperor has no clothes

Watching Baahubali 2 is like being in a purportedly romantic relationship with a psychotic person who keeps saying “if you can't handle me at my worst, you don't deserve me at my best”. The worst in this case is basically 150 minutes and the best is around 20 minutes. After a fairly decent first part, director S S Rajamouli seems to have gotten a carte blanche from his producers to let his imagination go unfettered in the second part.
He did make a wild and weird movie but it ends up being a distended mess. As suggested at the end of the first part, Baahubali 2 hits the ground running with the back story of Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas) and how before his coronation as king of the ancient city of Mahishmati he meets the love of his life Deva Sena (Anushka) under the garb of a simpleton. The first 60 minutes of the movie are slow and the comedy track involving Subba Raju as the simple-minded cousin of Deva Sena barely evokes any laughs. Things pick up a little when Deva Sena realises the real person behind the unassuming guy in her midst and goes to his kingdom with him. A tale of mistaken identities leads to Baahubali's near-real mother Sivagami (Ramya Krishna) have a rage of fit and instead she anoints her other son Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati) as the king.
Second half is how righteousness of both Sivagami and Baahubali lets Bhallaladeva unfurl a vortex of tragedies until his nephew (Mahendra Baahubali) returns to avenge for the deaths. For the last 22 months, we always knew that the antagonist is going to die a bad death in the hands of his blood-thirsty nephew. We have been waiting for the journey for a predestined destination but Rajamouli disappoints. He goes offtrack way too often and by the end we are left huffing and puffing that the whole fuss around Kattappa killing Baahubali is fairly predictable. (more)

Expect record opening: Baahubali 2 likely to rake in Rs 1,000 crore

The movie has stirred a box-office storm even before it hits the screens on Friday

Nearly two years after releasing the first part of his magnum opus “Bahubali-The Beginning”, director S S Rajmouli is all set to release the concluding part of the saga.
“Bahubali 2: The Conclusion” has stirred a box-office storm even before it hits the screens on Friday.
The first part, which ended at perhaps the most titillating junctures in the recent cinema history, opened to blockbuster collections in the range of Rs 50 crore on day one and went on to collect a massive Rs 650 crore (gross) at the worldwide box-office. The Rs 200-crore franchise is expected to take a record opening, getting close to or even exceeding its predecessor’s record.
Starring Telugu actors Prabhas and Rana Dagubatti along with Tamannaah and Anushka Shetty, the film will be released in as many as 6,500 screens in the country, including 3D and IMAX — the third film from India to be released in IMAX format (the first two being Dhoom 3 in 2013 and Bang Bang in 2015).
With no other movie releasing on the same day as Bahubali-2, the movie is well-positioned to break box-office records in the southern states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
According to trade analysts, the movie will out do its prequel and rake in around Rs 1,000 crore (gross worldwide) in its life time. Experts bet that the opening day figure could breach Rs 80 crore (gross). (more)

SC warns Subrata Roy: Pay Rs 1,500 cr by June 15, or go to jail

Apex court warns Roy he will be sent back to Tihar if cheque is dishonoured

Sahara chief Subrata Roy today said in Supreme Court that he would pay Rs 1,500 crore in the SEBI-Sahara account on or before June 15, 2017. However, the apex court warned Roy of dire consequences if the cheque was dishonoured.
While hearing a case involving embattled Sahara conglomerate chief Subrata Roy and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) over a dispute about returning money to its investors, the court warned Roy he would be sent to Tihar jail in case the cheque was not honoured.
Roy furnished a post-dated cheque of Rs 552 crore to be realised by July 15. The Supreme Court asked Roy to be present in court on June 19, the next date of hearing.
Last Friday, a special Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) court had quashed a non-bailable warrant issued against Roy as he appeared before the court.
The warrant was also quashed on an assurance from Roy that he will appear in all hearings now as the court asked him to submit an undertaking for the same.
The next hearing in this matter will take place on May 18 when the argument on framing of charges will begin.
The apex court earlier on April 17 ordered the auction of Sahara's Aamby Valley over the business conglomerate's alleged failure to deposit money for refunding to its investors. (more)

'Baahubali: The Conclusion' could be the game changer in Indian cinema

Movie is likely to hit 7,000 screens in India, but must do well in all versions to be a game changer

As the countdown to April 28 begins, the audience is gearing up for the release of ' Baahubali 2 : The Conclusion' in its quest to find out 'Why Kattappa Killed Baahubali', a question that surprised the audience -- and also became a major marketing hook line later -— at the end of the first part, 'Baahubali: The Beginning'.
'Baahubali: The Beginning', released on July 10, 2015, was a highly successful film at the box office. The first movie in the series was released in over 4,000 screens, grossing over Rs 600 crore worldwide. The film was a success in all the languages of its release -- Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam -— which is a rare feat. The movie was shot in Telugu and Tamil, and dubbed in Hindi and Malayalam. The second part is also being released in all these languages.
Both parts of the heavily VFX-driven fictional war film have been made at a combined production cost of about Rs 450 crore, the highest ever in India.
After the huge success of the first part, advance bookings of the concluding sequel have been very strong, and analysts expect it to create new box office records like never before.
Asked whether the film could be a game changer looking at its unprecedented hype, film trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai said, "It has the potential to be a game changer, but content is the ultimate thing. However, the way it's being promoted and looking at the advance bookings and expectations, it is definitely a game changer."(more)

Smith then joined Rahane in the middle and the duo added 58 runs in the space of seven overs to lay the foundation of a successful run chase.

Rahane scored 60 runs off 34 balls with six boundaries and three hits into the stands. He was finally dismissed when Nitish Rana pulled off an excellent catch at deep square leg off the bowling of Tim Southee.

Smith, however, continued in the same vein and remained unbeaten on 84 runs off a mere 54 deliveries. His innings included seven boundaries and three sixes.

Fittingly, it was he only who brought up the winning runs with two consecutive sixes off Kieron Pollard in the final over.

Read more

India rise to 101 in FIFA rankings, best ever since 1996

India have jumped 31 places from its last rank of 132nd in the previous month

The Indian football team achieved its best-ever FIFA ranking in over two decades as it jumped to 101 in the latest list released on Thursday.
This is the team's best-ever ranking since May 1996 - it was ranked 101 then also.
India have jumped 31 places from its last rank of 132nd in the previous month.
Following a couple of wins in recent times, India are now ranked 11th in Asia.
The highest FIFA ranking achieved by India ever is 94, which was attained in February 1996. India were ranked 99 in November 1993 and 100 in October 1993, December 1993 and April 1996.
The last couple of years had been fruitful for India as they won 11 of their 13 matches, including an unofficial game against Bhutan, while scoring a total of 31 goals.
India recently posted a 1-0 victory over Myanmar in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers — their first-ever in Myanmar in over 64 years.
Before that India's first win in an away encounter in over a decade came when they beat Cambodia 3-2 in an International Friendly.
The 4-1 win at home for India last year against Puerto Rico was also commendable.
"It has been a difficult road. Bringing in new blood and creating competition for places in the team has been a process, and I'm pleased we are moving in the right direction," India coach Stephen Constantine said. (more)

Jet Airways joins SpiceJet, Vistara, starts variable pay to save wage bill

Plan covers 100 execs; fixed pay at 80-85%, rest based on staff performance, firm's profitability

Jet Airways is introducing 15-20 per cent variable pay component for its top management as it looks to save on its wage bill.
The Mumbai-headquartered airline has a higher cost structure than other listed domestic airlines and is undertaking cost control exercises to remain nimble. The variable pay scheme will be applicable to around 100 senior executives of Jet Airways and is expected to result in annual savings of Rs 25-30 crore, an airline source.
While the fixed salary component will be 80-85 per cent, the remainder will be linked to employee performance and airline profitability. The senior executives will also not receive salary increment this year.
A Jet Airways spokesperson did not offer immediate comments.
Some of Jet's peers already have a variable pay scheme in place. Vistara and SpiceJet too have variable pay for its senior management. Air India a productivity linked incentive scheme which was a variable pay out in mid-1990s but the same was discontinued in 2012.
Jet Airways has a staff strength of around 15,000 and had a wage bill of Rs 2,316 crore in the first nine months of FY 17. Employee costs rose 26 per cent on a year on year basis for the period. The airline has around 2000 pilots on its rolls whose salaries account for nearly half of the wage bill. Read more

Sunrisers Hyderabad beat RCB by 35 runs in IPL opener

Yuvraj's innings had seven fours and three sixes; Henriques' innings had three fours and two sixes

Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad made a perfect start to their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign crushing a depleted Royal Challengers Banaglore (RCB) by 35 runs in the opening encounter on Wednesday night.
Veteran Yuvraj Singh's blazing blade (62 off 27 balls) and unheralded Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan Arman (2/36 in 4 overs)'s crucial breakthroughs enabled Sunrisers to outwit a Virat Kohli-less RCB in all departments.
A challenging target of 208 was achievable on a placid track but RCB could only manage 172 in 19.4 overs losing wickets at regular intervals. This was the first time after 23 IPL matches that RCB were all-out.
RCB's top four --- Chris Gayle (32), Mandeep Singh (24), Travis Head (30) and Kedar Jadhav (31) were all set before getting out. Kedar's dismissal was the turning point as RCB were never in the match after that.
He was looking dangerous during his 16-ball stay and was run-out when Ben Cutting's direct throw from the deep found him short by a metre.
On a belter where pacers became easy prey for the batsmen, Sunrisers skipper David Warner rotated his spinners well trying to take the pace off the deliveries.
Young Rashid, who created history by being the first Afghan to play an IPL match got Mandeep with a fuller delivery that didn't turn. Read more

Claiming HRA to get harder as govt cracks down on fake house rent receipts

I-T department could now ask for supporting documents to prove that you are a genuine tenant

If you have been producing fake rent receipts to lessen your tax burden there is a bad news for you now.
You may no longer be able to claim income tax deductions for house rent allowance (HRA) by fabricating fake bills. The income tax department may now ask for proof from the tax payer showing that he is a genuine tenant.
According to a report in Economic Times, Dilip Lakhani, senior tax advisor, Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP said, "The ITAT (Income Tax Appellate Tribunal) ruling has now laid down the criteria for the assessing officer to consider the claim of a salaried employee and if necessary question its justification. This will put the onus on the salaried class to follow the rules in availing the tax rebate.”
ITAT Mumbai recently struck down the HRA exemption claim of a salaried individual for rent paid to her mother. This opens a pandora's box for all salaried people as now an IT officer can ask for proof such as leave and licence agreement, letter to the housing co-operative society informing about the tenancy, electricity bill, water bill and so on.
Till now, a salaried person receiving HRA could escape paying tax on 60% of the amount by submitting a rent receipt. Now, it may not be possible as the department could ask for supporting documents.
This Tribunal ruling comes a few months after the government's decision to cap the loss on property bought with borrowed money. According to this ruling a person producing fake rent receipt will be deemed as counterfeit and no required documents will be available with him. There may not be any genuine rent outflow from the person and in some circumstances even if the person is a genuine tenant, the amount mentioned in the receipt may be more than what's paid.
However, if you pay more than Rs 1 lakh annually towards house rent, then quoting landlord's PAN is mandatory for claiming tax benefit under House Rent Allowance.

Read More

Dark matter may not exist at all, say scientists

If this finding is upheld, it could have a significant impact on models of the universe

The elusive Dark Energy , thought to make up 68 per cent of the universe, may not exist at all, scientists have claimed.
They believe that standard models of the universe fail to take account of its changing structure, but that once this is done the need for dark energy disappears.
From the 1920s, mapping the velocities of galaxies led scientists to conclude that the whole universe is expanding, and that it began life as a vanishingly small point.
In the second half of the twentieth century, astronomers found evidence for unseen 'dark' matter by observing that something extra was needed to explain the motion of stars within galaxies.
Dark matter is now thought to make up 27 per cent of the content of universe (in contrast 'ordinary' matter amounts to only five per cent).
Observations of the explosions of white dwarf stars in binary systems in the 1990s led scientists to the conclusion that a third component, dark energy, made up 68 per cent of the cosmos, and is responsible for driving an acceleration in the expansion of the universe.
In the new work, researchers led by PhD student Gabor Racz of Eotvos Lorand University in Hungary, question the existence of dark energy and suggest an alternative explanation. (more)

Jio Prime membership numbers ring in summer surprise for Reliance investors

Outlook for RIL's telecom business improved with Jio Prime customer base ahead of estimates

The Street has welcomed the strong customer response to Reliance Jio’s offer and the company’s plan to extend its Prime offer by 15 days. As analysts were anticipating Jio to retain 50-60 million customers after the end of its free period, the Prime membership number of 72 million customers also surprised the Street. Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), whose subsidiary is Jio, ended at Rs 1,371.20 on BSE.
This extension will help the company increase its telecom subscriber base from 72 million to its target of 100 million, say analysts. Further, subscribers to the Rs 149 plan have got additional time to migrate to the upgraded Rs 303 plan, which should lead to a higher base of Prime subscribers. The extended period, according to analysts at CLSA, allows for gradual transiting from free to paid services and further cement high-data usage habits.
Jio, they add, could have well over 100 million paid subscribers by March 2018, which could drive an upgrade to the earnings estimate for FY19 and rerate the stock (RIL) significantly.
There are, however, some concerns. The first is delay in monetisation on the back of significant upfront investments, given the three more months of complimentary service, while the other is the indication that the ‘Summer Surprise’ offer is the first of many surprises for RJio’s Prime subscribers. Read more
